Chapter 13
When the truth comes out
I didn’t know where to go once EMS took my mother to the hospital. I no longer knew who I could trust anymore and who was real in my life, or just out to fucking get me. This shit right here was becoming a world of craziness, and I was trying to figure out if I should surrender or adjust to it. Shit, I was good at adjusting to major changes in my life. But this was different, this shit was crazy. I didn’t understand what the fuck was going on. How was this nigga not my father? He’s the only man I could remember being in my life.
He’s the only face I could remember. I needed some more answers, so who better to ask than my so-called grandmother. I made my way to St. Vincent’s Medical Center back in Bridgeport, because I knew that they would be transporting my mother there. Fairfield didn’t really have major hospitals, but had emergency medical centers and clinics. Did the city not have enough time to build a hospital? I guess not, if you had to be transported to Bridgeport to get medical attention when facing an emergency.
I’m just saying, the shit was crazy to me, but St. Vincent’s was one of the best medical centers in Bridgeport. It took me about an hour to get there. When I arrived, I parked in the parking lot right out front and made my way through the emergency doors towards the side of the hospital. Only because I knew my mother wasn’t admitted yet. When I got there, I spotted my grandmother, so I skipped going to reception. I walked over and sat right next to this woman. I just felt it was crazy that I never met her before.
She looked over at me and smiled. “I’m glad you came. They’ll be admitting your mother soon. When they do, we’ll be able to see her.” I could see she wasn’t in her right mind. Her heart was hurting, but she was still happy to see me, even though all these years I have been the enemy, at least that’s how it seemed.
“What’s really wrong with my mother?” She turned to give me her full attention.
When she looked deeply into my eyes, I could feel her pain. “My daughter is dying of cancer… She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer a year after you ran away. I know you’ve never heard of me or seen me before, that’s because of your stepfather. He’s an evil man, listen to what I’m saying. He’s pure evil.” When she kept saying he was evil, I could feel this real uneasy feeling taking over my body.
When she told me my mother was dying of cancer, it hurt my heart. All these different emotions were too much for me to hold onto, and the tears began to flow heavily for my mother. Everything we’ve been through in the past no longer mattered to me. I didn’t want
